If seeing the stone stacked amongst many pallets does you no justice, here is a quick description of bluestone readily available in our area:

Full Color - Natural Cleft - Pattern Bluestone

Natural Cleft bluestone is a very raw material. This bluestone is literally peeled off Full Color Bluestoneof the huge slab that was unearthed at a quarry. The sides of the stone are cut using saws in order to produce pieces that will create a pattern, but the top stays natural.

The variance in thickness of Natural Cleft bluestone also creates a more laborious installation for the mason. Pieces are required to be handset and leveled, often multiple times in order for your patio to be level.

Thermal Finished - Pattern Bluestone

Bluestone Thermal FinishOnce sawn to shape to create a pattern, the bluestone is flame treated. A combination of water and heat will make the brittle surface “pop”, creating a smooth yet textured surface.

Thermal treated bluestone has often been inspected multiple times by the quarry in order to be selected for a thermal finish. This laborious process will result in bluestone patio stones that are uniform in height and surface texture.

Blue - Natural Cleft - Pattern Bluestone

Much akin to Full color natural cleft, often called “Select Bluestone”; natural cleftBlue Stone Patio Pavers blue is more uniform in color. Tones of blue and grey are consistent amongst the stones.

Again, this stone is manually separated at the quarry driving up the initial cost. The result is a less laborious installation and more uniformly colored bluestone patio.

Standup – Irregular Bluestone

By far the most raw bluestone patio material readily available. Completely irregular shapes that have ranges from 1” to 5” thick are bound together “stood-up” on a wooden pallet. Pallets often will have a full variety of the color spectrums native to bluestone (Blue, grey, green, brown lilac).

Irregular Blue StoneA bluestone patio make from irregular flagging is often referred to as a “broken glass” patio. Every piece will require cutting and chiseling in order to create a tight fit. Forgoing this laborious process will result in an uneven surface (as well as wobbly chairs and tables) on your new patio.
