The cost of a new bluestone patio will depend greatly on multiple factors. Try not to think of our company as a service provider, but rather a source that will provide you with design and build options. When you work with Captain’s Landscape, you will be purchasing a unique custom design along with the needed ‘man hours’ to build your design.

Factors that will determine your associated costs might be: size of patio, type of bluestone, elevation changes, soil stability, and patio accents like sitting walls or inlays. An average size patio for a family of four or a couple whom enjoys entertaining is about 500 square feet (25’x20’). Once furnished, this space will allow for about two areas of interest. One area you might choose to dedicate to grilling and dining for example.

Bluestone from the quarry will cost $6 to upwards of $15 per square foot. So using our example of 500 square feet, our bluestone material at $8 per square will cost $4000.00.

The construction of your patio will consist of excavating out the proposed space to a depth of 8” minimum. Different soil factors will determine the longevity of your patio. It is at this point that we will evaluate the soil stability and determine our excavation depth. The need for additional excavation will result in the use of more base aggregate, and more labor.

Additionally we will install the base material, compacting in lifts, and finally the bluestone. Bluestone is a natural stone. Pieces from the quarry will vary in thickness forcing us to install each piece by hand often multiple times to obtain a smooth surface.

Using the example of a 500 square foot patio:

$4000 in bluestone at $8 per square foot.

$850 of additional materials will be needed to install the patio (base aggregate, joint stabilizer, leveling material, and edge restraint).

$4500 in labor costs to excavate and install the patio.

Total cost of patio: $9350.00

Other design elements are often staples when building a patio. Grade changes can be altered by stone walls, sunken boulders act as accent pieces, and sitting walls make for a nice spot rest your feet or place a drink. Other common features include:

Built-in grills

Stone inlays (compass/sun/sail boat/ or custom!)

Different stone as a border

Lighting

Raised stone planters

Steps or Stairs

Pillars

Pergolas

Water features

And many more unique ideas….
